Texas announced its brand-new driver’s license design as of August 18, 2025, and the changes go well beyond aesthetics

Improved Security

More importantly for security, the new Texas driver’s licenses use polycarbonate materials.

When you look closely at the new IDs, you’ll also see tiny text and intricate patterns woven into the design. 

These might seem like decorative flourishes, but they’re intended for fraud-fighting purposes. 

When someone tries to photocopy or scan your license, these elements distort, making counterfeits obvious.

Some elements also glow under blacklight, which makes it perfect for those late-night ID checks at concerts or bars.

New Features

When looking at the new driver’s licenses you’ll notice several standout features including:

• The back of the license now includes a mini portrait, a smaller duplicate of your main photo that adds another layer of verification. 
• Tactile date of birth on the back, which you can feel when you run your finger over it. This raised element makes it much harder to alter someone’s age and provides an immediate authenticity check.
• Inclusion of what appears to be an election certificate on some versions. This suggests Texas may be integrating voter registration capabilities directly into certain IDs, or that these upgrades could indicate a non-driving identification card.
