The cards were last redesigned in 2009. The new credentials incorporate advanced security features that resist counterfeiting. The new design also highlights the beauty of iconic Virginia. The new credentials include images of unique Virginia features, such as an interior view of the state capitol rotunda dome, the Eastern Tiger Swallowtail butterfly (Virginia’s official insect), and the American Dogwood (the state flower). In a press release, DMV Commissioner Gerald Lackey explained, “The attractive design elements are actually layers of state-of-the-art security features.” Certain features remain the same as the previous version credentials. For example:

  • Banner colors are distinct for rapid recognition. The driver’s license banner is blue, and the ID card banner is green.
  • Driver’s licenses and ID cards issued to those under age 21 are vertical for easy identification.
  • REAL ID compliance is indicated by a black circle/star cutout symbol.
