New York DMV Selling Drivers License and Registration Data

New York – like many other states makes millions of dollars selling their entire database of drivers licensee’s and car registrations.    Last year NY made 60 million dollars selling this data.  In 2011, Florida made $63 million selling Florida drivers license and car registration data.  In Florida, the state charges $0.01 / record and there are 15.5 million records.   So it costs about $155K to purchase the entire database.  This means Florida sold the database to 406 companies and one might guess the same companies are purchasing from New York.  In the video below, county clerks are trying to put an end to the practice.
