South Carolina’s New 2025 Driver’s License: 40+ Security Features You Need to Know

As of July 29, 2025, South Caroline has a brand-new driver’s license design.

The changes span beyond highlighting the Palmetto State’s natural beauty.

The new driver’s licenses come with over 40 advanced security features and laser engraving technology that could protect you from identity theft and counterfeiting.

For those with an old license, it’s still valid until it expires.

But if you’re up for renewal, here’s what you can expect.

What’s New with South Carolina Driver’s Licenses?

The new design celebrates South Carolina’s heritage with stunning visuals including the iconic Statehouse, the Palmetto Tree and Crescent from the state flag, plus tributes to native wildlife like the the Yellow Jessamine (state flower), Carolina Wren (state bird), and Loggerhead Sea Turtle (state reptile).

The beautiful imagery is accompanied by a completely revamped production process that uses laser engraving technology, making the licenses more durable while providing significantly better protection against counterfeiting.

The new design even received praise from the Riverbanks Zoo and Garden for highlighting the state’s native species and the citizens’ responsibility to protect South Carolina’s wildlife.

Improved Security Features

Beyond the design, South Carolina’s new driver’s licenses received security upgrades as well which is a massive upgrade from previous versions.

As mentioned before, the laser engraving technology creates elements that are extremely difficult to replicate or alter. If someone tries to tamper with or counterfeit your license, these security features will make the alterations obvious to trained eyes.

The enhanced durability also means your license will hold up better to daily wear and tear and maintain its security features longer.

New Issuance Process

But, perhaps the biggest change is the actual issuance process.

You’ll no longer walk out of the DMV with your new license.

Instead, the state is transitioning to a centralized card issuance process, the same secure method used by 45 other states, the District of Columbia, and federal agencies.

Here’s how it works:

You’ll still visit SCDMV branches in person to apply, test, and provide documentation. But instead of receiving the license on the spot, you’ll get a temporary certificate (which is valid for up to 30 days and works for driving, voting, and ID purposes) on-site.

Your official license will arrive via mail in 7 – 15 business days.

In the meantime, you’ll receive a  QR code on the temporary certificate to track your new card’s production and mailing status.

NOTE: Remember to plan ahead, allow extra time for mail delivery when renewing, especially if your current license is close to expiring.

What to Know: For Residents

Whether you’re buying alcohol, going through airport security, or proving your identity anywhere else, the improved security features mean faster, more reliable verification.

With identity theft on the rise, knowing your license has 40+ advanced security features means one less thing to worry about.

Your personal information is better protected, and you’re less likely to deal with someone using a fake version of your ID.

What to Know: For Business Owners

For South Carolina businesses that handle ID verification, these changes are particularly welcome.

The enhanced security features make it much easier to spot fake IDs at a glance (though we still suggest using fake ID and age verification technology to know for sure), while the laser engraving technology creates verification points that are nearly impossible to replicate.

The new cards work with existing ID scanner systems, so you won’t need to upgrade your equipment to verify the enhanced licenses.

Important Details to Remember

  • No action required for current license holders. All existing South Carolina licenses remain valid until their expiration dates.
  • No price changes. The license costs remain the same and are among the lowest in the Southeast.
  • All license types included. The new design applies to every type and class of South Carolina license and ID card.
  • Maintains REAL ID compliance. The cards are still available as both REAL ID compliant and standard versions.

The rollout began with a pilot program in late August with statewide implementation expected later this fall.Check the SCDMV website for the latest updates and frequently asked questions about the new license design and process.
