Kentucky will begin issuing REAL ID compliment driver’s licenses and ID cards in early 2019. The new identity credentials offer significant security improvements. In line with other states’ practices, the Real ID compliant DL/ID cards will be voluntary. Kentucky residents may choose either a Standard Credential or a Kentucky will begin issuing REAL ID compliment driver’s licenses and ID cards in early 2019. This applies to applicants getting their first driver’s license/ID card and renewals. The Voluntary Travel ID is compliant with the Federal REAL ID Act of 2005. Voluntary Travel ID cards are identified by a star in the upper right. 
REAL ID compliant identification credentials will be required to board domestic flights and access restricted federal facilities after October 1, 2020.
