On March 1, 2019 the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) began issuing REAL ID compliant driver’s licenses and ID cards. Pennsylvania residents applying for or renewing will have the option of a REAL ID or standard driver’s license/ID card. REAL ID compliant cards are distinguished by a gold circle with a star in the center. Non compliant cards contain the text “NOT FOR REAL ID PURPOSES”. Currently, a REAL ID compliant driver’s license/ID card or passport is required to enter nuclear facilities, restricted federal buildings or military bases.
