Magnetic Stripes and Two Dimensional (2D) Bar Codes are the primary types of in machine readable technology in use on state issued drivers licenses and ID cards.  When buying an ID Scanner, check the coverage map to see what type of reader (magnetic and/or bar code) is required for the IDs you normally check.  The CardVisor ID Scanner can be purchased to just a magnetic card reader and field upgraded read 2D bar codes.  Below is an image of the back of a new Florida license which as of March 2004 added the 2D bar code.

Military IDs

Scan the 2D bar code - (see image below) which is on the same side as the Gold Chip or Integrated Circuit.
Do NOT scan the Magnetic Stripe as it is typically blank so scanning does not work.
